05 — Houses

The Houses

Eleven houses. A short factual note on each, then the silhouettes in this index.

Paris, 1837

Hermès

Thierry Hermès opened a harness workshop in Paris in 1837. The house's leather goods, including the Kelly and the Birkin, are produced in limited numbers and remain among the most recognised bags in the world.

Paris, 1910

Chanel

Gabrielle Chanel opened her first shop in 1910. The quilted 2.55 of February 1955, and the later classic flap, defined the house's handbag line: a chain strap, a turn-lock, and a shape meant to be worn rather than only carried.

Paris, 1854

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton began as a trunk maker in Paris in 1854. The monogram canvas dates to 1896. City bags such as the Speedy and the Neverfull grew out of that luggage tradition.

Paris, 1946

Dior

Christian Dior founded his couture house in 1946. The Lady Dior, associated with Diana, Princess of Wales in the mid-1990s, became the house's most recognised handbag.

Florence, 1921

Gucci

Guccio Gucci opened a leather-goods shop in Florence in 1921. The horsebit hardware and, later, the Jackie hobo became lasting parts of the house's bag vocabulary.

Milan, 1913

Prada

Mario Prada founded a leather shop in Milan in 1913. Under Miuccia Prada the house became known for both saffiano leather and the nylon it introduced to fashion in the 1980s.

Rome, 1925

Fendi

Adele and Edoardo Fendi founded the house in Rome in 1925. The Baguette, designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi and launched in 1997, is its defining handbag.

Vicenza, 1966

Bottega Veneta

Bottega Veneta was founded in Vicenza in 1966 and is known for intrecciato, a leather weave that identifies the bag without a large logo. The Jodie and Andiamo are contemporary expressions of that craft.

Paris, 1961

Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent founded his couture house in 1961. The leather line that carries the Saint Laurent name today includes quilted shoulder bags such as the Loulou and compact camera shapes such as the Mini Lou.

Paris, 1945

Celine

Céline Vipiana founded the house in Paris in 1945, beginning with made-to-measure children's shoes before moving into leather goods. The Triomphe clasp revives the house's arc motif on a clean flap.

Paris, 2009

Jacquemus

Simon Porte Jacquemus founded his label in 2009. Le Chiquito became known for an exaggerated miniature scale — a fashion silhouette first, a container second.

Stories Behind the Icons

Short histories, kept to what is widely documented. No invented dates, no invented quotes.

Hermès · 1984

The Story of the Birkin

In 1984 Jane Birkin met Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight between Paris and London. She spoke about wanting a leather bag larger and more practical than what she could find, and Dumas sketched a roomy, structured bag during the journey.

Hermès · from the 1930s

The Legacy of the Kelly

The bag began as a Hermès sac à dépêches, a structured leather holdall developed in the 1930s from the house's earlier haut à courroies. A single top handle, a trapezoid body and a front turn-lock defined it.

Chanel 2.55 Reissue. Licensed photograph, not an official campaign image.

Chanel · February 1955

Why the Chanel 2.55 Became an Icon

Gabrielle Chanel introduced the 2.55 in February 1955. The name is the date. At a time when formal bags were still often held in the hand, she gave this one a chain strap so it could sit on the shoulder and leave the hands free.

Dior Lady Dior. Licensed photograph, not an official campaign image.

Dior · mid-1990s

The Story Behind Lady Dior

In 1995, during a Paris visit connected with an exhibition of Cézanne, Bernadette Chirac presented Diana, Princess of Wales, with a structured Dior bag. Diana was photographed with it, and the cannage-quilted shape became publicly tied to her.

Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandoulière 25. Licensed photograph, not an official campaign image.

Louis Vuitton · 1930

The Evolution of the Louis Vuitton Speedy

Louis Vuitton introduced the Speedy in 1930. It took the idea of the Keepall, the house's soft travel duffel, and compressed it into a city bag for a faster kind of movement. The name refers to that pace.

Fendi Baguette. Licensed photograph, not an official campaign image.

Fendi · 1997

The Baguette: A Fendi Icon

Silvia Venturini Fendi designed the Baguette, and Fendi launched it in 1997. It was conceived to be carried in the crook of the arm. The resemblance to a loaf tucked there gave the bag its name.

Gucci Jackie 1961. Licensed photograph, not an official campaign image.

Gucci · early 1960s

The Jackie 1961 Story

The Jackie is a soft hobo closed with a piston clasp, a hooked piece of hardware that clicks into a ring. Gucci's name for the current line, Jackie 1961, points to the early 1960s.
